REDtag (Relevant Events Detection tag) is a novel Predictive Logistics platform, developed to optimize the supply chain process through a knowledge-based approach. REDtag is able to clearly identify critical events context, predict future occurrences and thus paving the way for further evolutions of a smart supply chain.
REDtag development is currently at Technology Readiness Level 4 (technology validated in lab).
Even with the current high-quality standards for transportation and logistics, still a significant percentage of shipped goods gets damaged along the logistic chain. Focusing only on online shops, official statistics are clearly showing an average rate of 40% for returned items, 15-25% of which due to damages during shipping, including breakages, alterations due to thermal and humidity threshold being exceeded, and overturning of delicate goods. Eurostat emphasizes that 8% of products bought online from Europe citizens are damaged during the shipping.
The main causes of damages to items are:
- High vibrations;
- Temperature and humidity surges.
With a market of 1.920 billion of U.S. dollars in 2016, representing 8.7% of total retail sales, online retail shops are expected to grow up to 15% of total retail sales by 2020. This means a loss of 320 billion of U.S. dollars, every year, due to impossibility of reducing different kind of damages during shipping. Furthermore, this value does not include other externalities, such as recycling costs, or CO2 emissions, with a not-negligible impact on the planet.
One crucial issue is the lack of information about the cause of the damage, where it did happen, and eventually who or what caused it, considering the heterogeneous nature of the logistic chain. The direct effect of this lack of information is the impossibility to predict future harmful behaviours, and therefore prevent future occurrences of the same.
In addition to traditional and consolidated logistic processes, which include internal logistics and last mile transportation, new logistic paradigms are evolving and spreading. REDtag can also showcase its potential in these scenarios, like last mile delivery through private vehicles and autonomous transportation systems such as drones and self-driving robots.
What is REDtag?
REDtag is a knowledge-based Predictive Logistics platform combining:
- Smart, small, economic, highly customizable tags with different sensors on board;
- Modern and scalable back end (Big Data, Machine Learning algorithms);
- Interactive and customizable dashboards;
- Easy-to-use mobile applications.
The REDtag sensor pack consists of an economic, configurable and easily applicable adhesive tag leveraging on already widespread technologies (such as NFC, Bluetooth or Ultra-Wide-Band) and equipped with acceleration, temperature, humidity and tilt sensors to send detailed aggregated information to the dedicated back end residing in the cloud.
This information processed with Big Data techniques, the analysis of augmented historical statistics and an accurate usage of Machine Learning algorithms tailored to the specific context allow to create a novel knowledge background about the supply chain process.
Highly configurable dashboards allow REDtag to easily adapt to different verticals such as food, medical, electronics.
Thanks to REDtag platform, customers will benefit from an end-to-end tracking system and will be able to identify weak points in the overall logistic chain and take corrective actions in order to decrease the number of breakages and optimize transportation processes, routes and packaging.
Small-sized. Similar to an adhesive patch, can be attached both inside the package, outside the package, or inside the packing materials, such as cushioning or bubble wraps.
Very economic. Even disposable, addressing 90% of the requirements at 10% of the cost, most of the tags are also produced in a very economic version.
Big Data and Machine Learning analysis. A main transversal feature to augment company statistical analysis tools, it is ideal to spot peculiar correlations, improve predictive analysis, and augment package behaviour analytics.
Self-configurable. Tags are auto-configured with special needs (crystal goods damage detection) or territorial regulations (Italian laws on fresh yogurt transportation) uploaded by the back-end or your company platform.
Extremely reliable. Equipped with on-board and back-end exclusive algorithms, correlating raw sensor-data (commonly used), with meaningful quantification of the events.
Environmentally friendly. All the tags are engineered caring about sustainability care, and some variants are produced including elements of sustainable-electronics.
